NORTHUMBERLAND FAMILY RESPITE SERVICES Inc. is a community based, county wide, family relief support program funded by the Ministry of Community and Social Services.

Northumberland Family Respite Services provides an opportunity for families of individuals with special needs to "take a break", socialize, or spend time with other siblings. These special needs individuals may be children aged 0 - 17 with developmental and/or physical disabilities, emotional and behavioral (if receiving additional related services), or may be adults with developmental delays.

It is the intent of the program to foster and support the families of special needs individuals who live at home. To this end, volunteers are recruited, fully screened through the Children's Aid Society, Police Department, References, Physicians and Home visits to support natural families in a caring, sensitive, understanding, genuine manner and by offering tangible support in the form of family relief.

OTHER PROGRAMS MANAGED BY NORTHUMBERLAND FAMILY RESPITE SERVICES

Family Home Program

The purpose of the Family Home Program is to match and place adults with developmental handicaps into carefully selected private homes. The program seeks to create an environment that is both nonrestrictive and flexible for all people involved. It is built on a foundation of traditional family values and will reflect the love, caring and participation that are inherent in any well functioning family. The same screening required by a respite volunteer applies here.

Special Services At Home Program

Northumberland Family Respite Services maintains a database/registry of Contract Workers who have been screened by the Children's Aid Society and Police and may be available to work for parents or caregivers who receive Special Services at Home funding or other funding. Northumberland Family Respite Services will try to match the geographical area and interests of both caregivers and workers and will provide names and phone numbers of workers to caregivers. Hourly rates and conditions are agreed upon by the caregiver and worker and Northumberland Family Respite Services involvement is to provide a registry of screened workers suitable to the caregivers needs and possibly resolve any issues that may arise between the caregiver and worker.

Summer Buddy Program

The Summer Buddy Program provides community activities for children and adults who qualify for the Respite Program. Usually from July to early September, depending on funding availability, children and adults are matched for summer recreational opportunities. Full screening of workers applies.
