What'sNew? Standards are
intensely loyal and bond strongly to their families. Having been bred from the
beginning as watch dogs most still retain this trait. When a stranger appears on the
scene they will bark a warning until their owners arrive. Once a friendly visitor is
invited in they are quick to make friends and settle down. |

As pups they are energetic and intelligent a constant source of
entertainment. However for those not committed to dog ownership and training they
can be a handful. Puppy hood for the Standard Schnauzers extends to almost two years of
age. Once properly trained and socialized they mature into splendid companions.
Not always the best choice for a family with small children, their
boisterous ways can be too much for children under the age of six.
Adding a schnauzer pup to your home is equivalent to a two year old toddler,
be sure you are ready for this. |

Standards are hardy
dogs, suffering from few of the diseases that often plague the more popular breeds.
All reputable breeders x-ray the hips on all their breeding stock, these hip x-rays can be
certified by some organizations (Ontario veterinary college) clear of dysplasia at 18
months of age or OFA (orthopedic foundation of America) at 24 months of age. |

They posses a non-shedding coat and tend not to aggravate persons normally allergic to dogs. Although the Standard Schnauzer does not go through a twice yearly shedding the hair does drop out as it grows. With proper grooming this is minimal and not noticeable around the house. I have found that a close clipped coat causes the lest aggravation to allergy sufferers. |
