I Remember

In memory of Kodie - Cortaillod Vitoria, CD.

Dec.9th 1989 - Dec.13th 2003

I vaguely remember a couple of family dogs when I was very young; however, for most of my childhood into my teens and early twenties I never had a dog.  Although, we may own and love many dogs in a life time, we only ever have one first dog.  Kodie was my first Standard Schnauzer, the first dog of my adult life.

I can remember like it was yesterday, my husband and I getting out of our pick-up truck at the breeders, seeing her for the first time.  She was shy and beautiful and didn’t want me to touch her at first.  I remember leaning as far as I could, stretching my hand out to rub her chin.  I don’t think Kodie was as sure as I was that we were meant for each other.

I remember the anticipation of going back a week later to bring her home, the wait was physically painful.   I remember leaving the breeders house with her perched on my lap, a timid, confused eight month old puppy that was about to change my life forever.

I remember she loved to retrieve sticks from the lake, rides in the car, weekend walks, ear rubs, my singing voice, chasing squirrels, sleeping in sunny spots, a good pack howl and sausages on Sunday mornings.

She has been for fourteen years my best friend, my confidante, my rock.  Her loyalty, respect and devotion to me has been humbling, she has never let me down and in all honesty, I do not know of a single person in my life that I can say the same of.  She possessed the most pure, sweet soul, she has loved me honestly and with no stipulations or demands, this I remember most.

On a sunny, cool, winters afternoon Kodie passed away peacefully in my arms.

Sweet dreams my friend, you were loved.
