Florence Mary B
1883 - 1957

A picture of a woman believed to be Aunt Dot in an undated picture found in the possession of Lucy Hewitson, Kenneth Burd's first wife. Lucy had met Aunt Dot several times in Bognor Regis at Arthur's house and had written her name on the back of the photograph.
Florence Mary Burd, always known as 'Dot' was a woman of mystery because of the lack of information left behind. Born in India in Jubbulpore in 1883 she became a schoolteacher, we know that because she was listed as one on Walter Burd's attestation papers in 1917, and remained unmarried all of her life.

Not without romance in her life family lore recollects that she did have a beau who was killed in the Great War. For a description of the death in battle click here

Capt James Patrick Tighe of the 2nd Bn. Royal Irish Regiment. He was killed on the 15th July 1916 on the Somme at Bazentine le Petit. The picture on the right was found with the picture of the woman suspected to be Aunt Dot. The name on the back was J.P. Tighe.

As Florence lived with her family in Ireland for many years perhaps she met him there.

She died in Littlehampton, on the 1st of July 1957where she lived in a nursing home for some years.
