Dear Ben:
Here are a couple more election issues
for your collection and my position, of course.
1) seeking mixed use development
of the "buffer" area between Third Street and Division, south of Albert
-
council should actively seek developers
with a vision which is compatible with the King Street towns landscape
-
council may wish to revisit "vista"
views of Victoria Hall in the Official Plan
-
demolition of the water treatment/chemical
plant and clean-up should be actively encouraged
-
co-operative or other not-for-profit
housing should be featured
2) The new council should revisit decisions
which may negatively affect vehicular traffic flows away from King Street
-
council should review the impact of
the Burnham, William, and Elgin Street project as it is likely to divert
traffic from King Street West to Elgin Street West
-
council should review the impact of
west Cobourg development in light of east-west traffic patterns, Walmart
and the new hospital are adding to the retail/commercial/services shift
to the west
-
council should be pro-active in the
redevelopment of the NHCC site
3) Wheelchair access
-
council should explore the proposal
brought before the Town Accessibility Advisory Committee regarding retractable
folding ramps which can be affixed at low cost to merchants
4) Demonstrated Community Leadership
-
candidates for the next council should
be able to demonstrate a long term commitment to community development
beyond elected office
I have over twenty-one years
of voluntary community development experience and have served as an appointed
member of the Toronto Public Library Board and the Town of Brighton Police
Services Board
Please feel free to expand or comment
on any of the above issues or challenge the writer on any other issues.
Thanks for your forum.
Steven McCahon, Candidate for Town
Council
