This is where I place the new
candidates' answers to the question
"Why do you want to be on
Council"
We know why the incumbents want to come back:
"Unfinished business, want to offer my experience to new council, I like the job, blah blah!" so they did not get asked. The other evening Peter Delanty gave his reason for wanting to be Mayor:
"After sitting on Council for three years I realised that Cobourg deserves more than the status quo!"Bob Spooner at the same meeting didn't really say why he wants to be Deputy Mayor he only explained what he would try to do when he was the DM (his 5 point plan..."There's no 'I' in team"). So he doesn't get ink!
| Candidate's name | "Why I want to be on Council!" |
| Joanne Heipel | "I have been working with the Town and others in Donegan Park as a member of the Cobourg Baseball Association and I think there are improvements to be made in the way we do things there. Also I want to be involved in economic development." |
| Pam Jackson | "I have been critical of the way things have been done by previous councils and I think that you cannot criticise without offering alternatives. I want to put things back into Cobourg, which has been good to me, and I want to do that on Council." |
| Dean McCaughey | "I missed the political way of life and now that I am retiring from teaching I will be able to get involved again." |
| Rene Roberge | "I am so excited by the prospect of Downtown renewal I want to be part of it!" |
| Gail DeVeau | "I live and work in Cobourg and am concerned about the negatives being thrown around, I want to stress the positives. perhaps take a different approach in making Cobourg a better place" |
| Marg Grundy | " I am a 20 year resident of Cobourg and and the council needs new people and I want to get involved. I know there is a learning curve to it but I'm willing to learn. I'll listen, rationalise and then make decisions based on what I think is best for Cobourg" |
| Steven McCahon | Hasn't been asked yet! but read his email |
| Lloyd Williams | "I have been involved in public life since 1969 and I like the decision making process, I think I am good at, I do my homework and the public benefits" |
| Gerry Drage | "I am concerned with the program cuts, especially
with the music and industrial arts, and want to do something about it"
"If we can't get anywhere with the government, and that includes talking to the Minister, I am prepared to take a hard line." "I am a supporter of the Public School system and don't even think about charter schools or vouchers!" |
| Anne MacDonald | "I have something valuable to offer, experience and knowledge of the town and its players" |
First prize in the honesty stakes goes to the person who admits that being on council feeds the ego and is enjoyable for about 10% of the population, and they are in that !0%. Having fun also benefits the population, so don't believe anybody who says "I want to serve the people" they won't last five minutes! A winner: Lloyd Willaims, closely followed by Dean McCaughey
