EAGLE.CA - Customer Support Centre

Personal Home Pages

In this section, we're going to review how to transfer your web site to the eagle server, how to add a counter, and how to create a form that can be emailed to you.

Monthly dial-up accounts can have up 5 megabytes of data storage in your home directory. Additional storage space, 5 Megs at a time, can be purchased (+5meg = $5/month).

Please keep in mind that the eagle Staff can't teach you how to create pages in HTML. Learning HTML is something best left to a book or even classroom instruction! But we can offer some quick tips and suggestions.

How to Transfer your Site to the Eagle Server

Once you create your web page you need to transfer it to the eagle server so the rest of the world can view it! Click here  for complete instructions. This is a little tricky your first time through so be prepared for a few mistakes before you get it right.

Adding a Counter

You can try to use our pre-made counter, as instructed below, or search the net for free counters.

The ability to run "scripts" from your home directory is OFF by default for security reasons. Therefore, you have to contact support@eagle.ca and have the scripting feature turned on before the following will work.

Add the following code, exactly as it appears below,  in your html document:

 You are visitor <!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/counter2"-->

Your page must end with the extension .html and not .htm and if you are adding a counter to a page on a Virtual Domain hosted at eagle, you will need to use a different counter set up for your domain's use.

Next, you have to make the file "executable" in the Unix world in order for the web server to parse the Server Side Include. If you are using WS_FTP, simply right click your file, select Chmod (UNIX) and check off the three Execute boxes.

Form to Email

This is somewhat advanced and may be difficult if you are new to HTML, but it can be somewhat simplified by using our pre-built script (from Matt's Script Archive). Click here for instructions.

The nice thing about this package is all the commands are embedded into your HTML document using the "hidden" tag, saving you the hassle of setting up and learning about cgi-scripts.

CGI-Scripts

The ability to run cgi-scripts from your home directory is disabled by default for security reasons. If you wish to run some customized scripts, you will have to contact our support staff with an explanation of what you're doing and the finished code.

Directory Browsing

The ability to get a directory listing from a personal home directory over the web has also been disabled for security reasons. This may get confusing for some, but basically, if you want somebody to find your files, you'll have to tell them the exact url or create an index.html page listing the contents.

What is my web url?

Your url takes the form of: http://www.eagle.ca/~login_name

Notice the tilde (~) before your login name, it's very important!
