Greetings everyone:

By now you will have learned of the horrific situation in Haiti. Today the Red Cross is reporting that Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Port-au-Prince has left 45,000 to 50,000 people dead. This number is sure to grow in the coming days and weeks.

Several Canadians have lost their lives and many more are unaccounted for.

Update: This evening, the body of a fourth Canadian, RCMP Sgt. Mark Gallagher, was found. I had the pleasure of meeting Sgt. Gallagher two years ago when I spoke to a group of law enforcement officers in Halifax.  My first impression of him was that he was a man who loved his job. I know his comrades have been hoping for good news and they will be devastated now that Sgt. Gallagher will not be returning to duty.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless. Aid is starting to reach the Caribbean island but the devastation is making it difficult for aid workers to get supplies to those who need it.

Beside the immediate rescue effort, there will be an ongoing need for water and shelter. To help, eagle.ca has decided to contribute to ShelterBox Canada. ShelterBox Canada is a registered charity that deploys survival kits around the world. Each ShelterBox provides a dry shelter, warm bed, light and heat, clean water, cooking aids and tools for 10 people. You can learn more at www.shelterbox.ca

I'd like to invite you to join with us in securing two ShelterBoxes to be sent to Haiti.

A ShelterBox costs CDN$1,000. If eagleMembers and friends contribute $500 for a ShelterBox, eagle.ca will add another $500 toward the purchase of up to two ShelterBoxes.

If we surpass $1,000 in contributions from clients we'll add another $250 for every $750 donated by eagleMembers for subsequent ShelterBoxes (to a maximum of five ShelterBoxes in total).

eagle.ca will coordinate contributions and ShelterBox Canada will issue income tax receipts for all contributions of $20 or more.

ShelterBox is also working closely with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to attain matching-dollars from CIDA. In other words, every dollar you contribute to our ShelterBox initiative may be matched my the Canadian government. Watch www.shelterbox.ca for more details.

Please consider our challenge. The people of Haiti are in desperate need and we can all help.

Cheers,

-tom
