Kawartha Lakes Spirit Walks
Alderville First Nation
We are the Mississauga Ojibway, some 700 descendants of ancestors who once roamed the forests, streams, rivers and lakes of northern Ontario. Our home is called Alderville First Nation.
You will learn how we came to be here; the pressures on the Ojibway language, traditions and landbase; and how we have maintained a hold the past while being progressive and proactive for the benefit of the present and future. Alderville First Nation is home to one of the rarest environmental experiences in Ontario - the Black Oak Savanna.
With experienced interpreters, we invite you to wander through natural corridors of black oak trees, prairie grasses lapping at your knees, the horizon a visual treat of rare wildflowers and butterflies. There are different nature walk themes at different times of the year: The Medicine Walk...natural healing; The Prairie Sea...masses of grasses; Flights of Fancy..things with wings; Let's speak Ojibway...our names.
Come walk with us, the Mississauga Ojibway, to hear why we think this is one of the most magical of places, why we cherish and protect it. Listen to the land's voice, friends of the Black Oak Savanna are waiting to greet you....
